Ministry preparing proposals to resume flights to Cairo

VLADIVOSTOK, Sep 6 (PRIME) – Russia’s Transport Ministry is preparing proposals to resume air flights to Cairo, Minister Maxim Sokolov said Wednesday at the Eastern Economic Forum.

“We are preparing proposals on resuming air travel, actually only in destination of Cairo so far. Regular or charter flights – this will depend on interests of companies, both Russian and Egyptian. The format of air flights will be offered by the airlines,” he said.

In theory, there are prerequisites to resume air travel between Russia and Egypt this year, and the issue is currently being discussed at a high level, Sokolov said.

Egypt has expressed its readiness to sign a protocol on aviation security with Russia, he said.

Moscow suspended flights to Egypt in November 2015 after a major crash of a Russian plane over the Sinai Peninsula. Russia believes that the plane was likely brought down by a bomb.

President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday he hoped that the air travel issue with Egypt will be solved in the near future.
